The Justice Souter Retirement Scandal

Sunday, May 3, 2009

Photobucket

Just extrapolating out from this (from Media Matters):

Following the confirmation of swine flu cases in the United States, radio hosts Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, and Fred Thompson purported to detect possible political motivations in the U.S. and United Nations' handling of the situation, with Limbaugh suggesting on his April 27 show that the official response "is designed to expand the role and power of governments and schools" and accusing the media of "fall[ing] right in line here with amplifying the nature of the crisis."

Also on April 27, Beck asserted that there are "only two ways to look at" the government's response to the swine flu. First, he claimed that it "could be that because Barack Obama's administration is so incredibly efficient, could be that they know that this is much worse than we think it is." Second, Beck claimed the administration's response to the crisis "could be to move his Health and Human Services person [Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius] into the office rapidly." He added: "She can be confirmed right out of the gate because of this swine flu. So don't look over here, look at the swine flu, look at the swine flu, look at the swine flu. And she just goes right through the gate."

Senator Ben Nelson sells out the public and the administration on Health Care

Saturday, May 2, 2009

Photobucket

Via The Seminal:

The company Nelson finds himself in is laid out clearly: business, the insurance industry, and Republicans. Of course, this isn’t surprising, considering his campaign donation history. Open Secrets says Nelson received $608,709 from the insurance industry in 2007-2008, making the insurance industry his biggest donor group, more than lawyers and even lobbyists.

And so, Nelson has decided to bow to the wishes of his campaign contributors, instead of standing up for what 73% of the American public want: A choice of a public health insurance option.

In his opposition, Nelson can’t even muster the courage to be honest about his motives. Instead, he parrots the latest right-wing talking point, that a public health insurance option will somehow undermine the employer-based health care system.

Who needs republicans when there are so many democrats selling the public out?

Update: More from Washington Monthly's Steve Benen:

What I find interesting about this, though, is that Nelson worries that the public option would be too popular. The goal, according to Nelson's approach, has less to do with improving the system, and more to do with making sure insurance companies -- the ones whose services Americans may not like -- are protected.

Let's be clear about this. If the reform effort includes a public plan, Nelson is concerned that it will do such a good job of offering quality care at a lower cost that Americans might be inclined to move away from a system that has screwed them over for many years.

This would be a bad thing, says Nelson.

There's a very good reason reconciliation was included in the process. Can a quality bill pass this fall on an up-or-down vote? Yes. Can it get 60 votes? Probably not.

Swine Flu versus Guns

Sunday, April 26, 2009

Photobucket

Who didn't see this coming? Michelle Malkin, Wingnut-In-Chief, writes a post on her blog titled:

"Hey, maybe we’ll finally get serious about borders now; Update: 2 swine flu cases confirmed in Kansas; 8 probable in NYC; Update: US declares public health emergency"

A highlight from this gem:

I’ve blogged for years about the spread of contagious diseases from around the world into the U.S. as a result of uncontrolled immigration. We’ve heard for years from reckless open-borders ideologues who continue to insist there’s nothing to worry about. And we’ve heard for years that calling any attention to the dangers of allowing untold numbers of people to pass across our borders and through our other ports of entry without proper medical screening — as required of every legal visitor/immigrant to this country — is RAAAACIST.

9/11 didn’t convince the open-borders zealots to put down their race cards and confront reality.

Maybe the threat of their sons or daughters contracting a deadly virus spread from south of the border to their Manhattan prep schools will.

She spews this without showing how any of the swine flu cases are related to illegal immigration. Insinuating that all people who traveled from Mexico to the US since the new flu was detected must have been illegal immigrants doesn't make any sense. In Malkin's world, people carried disease to the US, therefore they must be entering illegally. Because no US citizen ever got sick on vacation, right?

I mean, let's be honest. Leachman's Dancing with the Stars experience is perfect practice to portray someone who might have sold out the country but who still has a fabulous sense of style.

Ah , the desperation of a manufactured controversy. I'm going to write up a longer blogpost about this later, but this is ridiculous. This is outrageous. And this is outright offensive.

And I feel pretty much the same way as I did yesterday. He's got actual things to worry about.

Update: Long post about this manufactured controversy is here.

John McCain's Earmark Tirade

Wednesday, March 4, 2009

Photobucket

When John McCain lectures about earmarks, all I hear is "blah blah Bear DNA blah blah." The omnibus spending bill is comprised of only 2% earmarks, of which 40% go to republicans. Forgive me if I care about like, ninety-seven other issues first. John McCain's righteous indignation would be better directed republican Senator Thad Cochran, the largest earmark benefactor, rather than a president who has a whole lot of more important shit to deal with.

Republicans: Surgeons who Don't Believe in Surgery

Wednesday, February 25, 2009

Photobucket

Last night in Bobby Jindal's speech, he made the same tired Republican point that government can't solve all your problems. Yeah, we know. But there are problems that government is supposed to be able to solve. When government fails, it's a problem.

Republicans are like surgeons who don't believe in surgery. Not every health related problem in your life will require surgery. In fact, most won't. But when you need a kidney transplant, for the love of god, you want a surgeon who believes in surgery.
